John Leiws London Hand Luggage External

John Lewis’ most popular piece of hand luggage offers good value for money at £65 and fits the majority of airlines but notably not Virgin or Ryanair.John Leiws London Hand Luggage Internal

Dimensions:  55cm x 38cm x 25cm. Fits BA and easyJet. Doesn’t fit Virgin or Ryanair.

Hand Luggage Review: Good News

Fits 97 of the airlines we tested, including British Airways and easyJet. As it bears the John Lewis name, you can be sure of good quality construction.

The outer fabric is in an understated grey to help separate it from the mass of black wheelie bags you see at airports and has an attractive blue lining. Internally, there are compression straps to help you get more items into your hand luggage and also an internal zipped pocket to store items you want separate from the main contents of the bag. There’s an external side pouch for easy access to your travel documents, books and earphones.

John Lewis have thought about how you will use this piece of hand luggage, as there’s a handle on both the long side and the short side, making it easier to move the bag in and out of overhead lockers.

The two wheels allow convenient and pain free carriage of the item via the extendable handle, allowing you to tow it behind you as you walk.

John Lewis offer a free delivery service and also a free returns service if you’re not happy, meaning you can shop with confidence and if you’re not happy with the item return it to one of their stores or post it back.

Hand Luggage Review: Bad News

It won’t fit in 107 of the airlines we researched, including Virgin Atlantic (its 2cm too wide for Virgin Atlantic!) and Ryanair as its 5cm too deep at 25cm (Ryanair only allow bags less than 20cm deep).

It’s a soft sided bag with an expandable side, allowing for 20% extra capacity, which may mean you are risking extra charges if you overfill, as the sides will stretch beyond the stated dimensions and contravene the allowances of airlines such as easyJet. Being soft sided it may be prone to ripping if overpacked.

John Leiws London Hand Luggage ExternalAt 2.9kg this accounts for nearly 34% of the average airline’s weight restrictions, mostly due to the weight of the wheel and trolley mechanism.

I’m giving this 3 stars out of 5. If they make it slightly smaller to fit in Ryanair and Virgin it would be a 4.
